The Oh My Ink! web-app project is an exciting venture for a startup technology company branching out from a traditional tattoo shop in Hong Kong. As the sole UI/UX designer, I collaborated closely with the founder and developers to bring this innovative concept to life. Key metrics for success include user engagement, conversion rates, and customer satisfaction.

Why Only Secondary Research?

Due to time and resource constraints inherent in a freelance project with an urgent delivery timeline, conducting detailed user interviews or surveys was not feasible. Instead, I opted for extensive secondary research on the tattoo industry, market trends, and user pain points. This informed our design decisions and ensured alignment with user needs.

Key Insight:
  • Tattoo studio software market caters to specific needs with features like appointment scheduling and inventory tracking.

  • Cloud-based software offers accessibility, while on-premise software is more secure.

  • Global tattoo market growth is driven by demand for customized designs and technological advancements.

  • Social media platforms popularize tattoos, showcasing styles and inspiring individuals.

  • Concerns about skin reactions and infectious diseases impact tattoo service demand.

  • Users face pain points in virtual tattoo try-on due to accessibility and inaccurate predictions.

Why User Flow Matters?

Upon onboarding the project, I discovered that the initial wireframe provided by the founder lacked a cohesive user flow, resulting in a cluttered and disjointed design. Taking the initiative, I meticulously crafted a comprehensive user flow to streamline navigation and ensure no essential screens were overlooked.

Subsequently, I expanded the wireframes to incorporate the missing screens vital for the project's success.

Why Branding Guide?

With only a logo provided initially, I developed a cohesive branding guide to solidify Oh My Ink!'s visual identity. Drawing inspiration from street art and graffiti styles synonymous with tattoo culture, I curated a moodboard and selected a bold color palette of yellow and purple. The chosen font, "Tinos," reflects a classic yet contemporary aesthetic, perfectly encapsulating the brand's essence.

Why Launch Before Usability Testing?

Given the project's urgency, our approach prioritized launching the product quickly with plans for ongoing updates and refinements based on user feedback. Following internal testing and iterations, the project transitioned seamlessly to development. Continuous communication with the developers ensured a smooth implementation process, setting the stage for future enhancements.

Conclusion

In summary, the Oh My Ink! web-app project exemplifies the fusion of creativity and technology in the tattoo industry. Despite constraints, our collaborative efforts have laid the foundation for a dynamic platform that empowers users to explore tattoo artistry seamlessly. With a commitment to continuous improvement, we eagerly anticipate the app's launch and the positive impact it will have on tattoo enthusiasts worldwide.
